Take the opportunity to immerse yourself in the French language and a fascinating culture on one of our French language placements, available in Morocco and Senegal. With 60 hours of tuition per month and also accommodation with a local family, you'll learn quickly and can practise what you've learnt with your host family each day!
Lessons are with a tutor one-to-one and are tailored to your ability. Whether you are a complete beginner or have been learning French for a number of years, being surrounded by the language every day will help your skills progress quickly. After your lessons you will, of course, have plenty of time to complete your homework and explore the area with other volunteers.
French in Senegal
On a day-to-day basis the main language of communication in Senegal is French. Most Senegalese people in Saint Louis also speak the tribal language of Wolof as their mother tongue, and they will teach you a few words, but to buy items in a shop, chat with your placement supervisor, joke with your host's son - you will need some French.
If you are not confident in starting a placement before improving your French, a month long intensive language course could be the option. We provide 60 hours of one-on-one tuition with fully qualified French language teachers. During your first lesson your teacher will assess your ability, so the classes will be tailored to your level.
To supplement your studies you will live with a local host family, where you can put your new vocabulary into practise. Once you have completed a month's study, you could go on to spend some time on a Teaching, Care & Community or Sports project.
If your French is good enough, you could also spend time working at one of our radio journalism placements.
French in Morocco
Rabat provides a cosmopolitan setting in which to improve your French. Although Arabic is the official language in Morocco, Rabat's focus on politics and business means that French is important here.
You will receive 60 hours of tuition per month and be accommodated with a French-speaking local family. Using the language every day and with plenty of access to Francophone culture through libraries, cinemas and music, your skills will rapidly improve. Depending on when you arrive in Morocco you may take the course alone or with two or three other volunteers at the same level as you.
You also have the option of taking a 14-hour language course alongside your placement, or if you're staying at least 3 months, a 60-hour course spread over the duration of your placement. Click here for more details.
