Care & Community in Nepal

With 5,000 street children in Nepal, and the majority concentrated in the capital, Kathmandu, joining us on a care placement in Nepal is not only rewarding but extremely valuable to your host community.

We have a huge range of placements available - so whether you are an experienced care worker, or simply want to help out we'll find the placement for you.

Many of the orphanages in Nepal have facilities such as a football or basketball pitch, so they are great for those who are keen to get involved with sports. You can set up sports teams and leagues, as well as playing with the children to your heart's content. Previous volunteers working in orphanages have spent some time during term helping with English classes at the schools the children attend; others focus their work on the early mornings and the evening when the children return to their orphanages.

Volunteers at the Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre for Disabled Children work with children who have physical disabilities. In order to receive corrective surgery, children have to spend extensive periods at the Centre, away from their homes and family. They need the interaction and support provided by volunteers on a day-to-day basis. You will also be working with children who may have been shunned from society as a result of their disfigured limbs, and by befriending the children, can work towards raising their self-esteem. The centre is set on a hill overlooking a quaint village outside Katmandu - with a view of the High Himalayas.

You could help with specialised, or general care work at the Nutritional Rehabilitation Centre, set up to provide a stable, nurturing environment for impoverished children suffering from varying degrees of malnutrition.

The Saathi Drop-in Centre offers basic education, food and shelter to boys from the streets, from age 5 to 17. You could help organise activities and even assist with giving vocational training here.

The Life Development Centre is dedicated to providing the best available teaching and general care to children with mental disabilities. On this placement volunteers can use their artistic talents, music, games and teach some basic English.
