Cambodia has become one of the must-visit destinations in South East Asia. With its history of war now an increasingly distant memory, in the last few years Cambodia has had rave reviews. With its pristine beaches, ancient temples and exotic jungle, it's not hard to see why.
Bordered by Thailand, Laos and Vietnam and with a coastline on the tropical Gulf of Thailand, Cambodia is at the heart of South East Asia. In fact the mighty Khmer empire, with its centre in modern-day Cambodia once controlled most of the neighbouring countries. Today the country has started a decade of peace and Cambodians have stopped dwelling on the past and they are focussed on the future.
Teaching Abroad is based in Phnom Penh, the vibrant and charming capital city. Whilst many areas of the city are booming, with a beautiful river front and lively nightlife, it is hard to escape the poverty and the fact that many Cambodians are still struggling to survive. Our Care and Community projects which work with orphanages and street-children can help to give some Cambodian children a brighter future. Furthermore, with the country becoming an increasingly popular tourist destination the desire to learn English has never been greater and volunteers will be put to good use in the classrooms of the capital.
At weekends and during travel time Cambodia has a huge amount to offer. The world famous gathering of temples at Angkor is a must for all visitors. Climbing over huge tree roots to the entrance of partly hidden doorways will bring out the Indiana Jones in anyone! However, Cambodia offers far more than just the temples for which it is so famous; go elephant trekking in the East, or try snorkelling and dolphin spotting in the seas surrounding Sihanoukville before enjoying the sunset with a bottle of Angkor beer at your local beach bar.
Travelling to the neighbouring countries has also never been easier with a well trodden tourist trail into Thailand and border crossings now easily accessible into Laos and Vietnam, two more countries that along with Cambodia are crying out to be visited before the tourist masses discover their charms.
